Single Ladies Premier episode

On Sunday May 29th, Vh1 debuted a new show called Single Ladies. Due to my insatiable appetite for drama laced reality television, I was intrigued by the concept. The two hour premier episode introduced the audience to three best friends. Val (Stacy Dash) was in a long term but going nowhere relationship with her beau Quinn of five years. The first few minutes of the premier begin with her giving her boyfriend an ultimatum: commit or quit (which he easily quits). Despite her confidence, ambition and and beauty, she seems to struggle with her identity. Instead, she then begins her quest in single womanhood as she sets out to discover....HERSELF.

Keisha (Lisa Raye McCoy) plays a character we have seen her play before. She is a middle aged stripper err ugh video vixen who despite her age, still views men as disposable objects. Because of her looks, she arrogantly avoids the nuisance of actually cooking or caring for a man. Instead, she relishes in lavish attention from a wide array of male suitors. Instead of finding the “ONE” she focuses on the attention, compensation and affection of many “ones”.

And there is April (Charity Shea), the blonde haired sexy and married white female with a healthy appetite for “good black men”. She is the only married “lady” but it is apparent that she is unsatisfied in her relationship. Instead, she delves into a full blown affair with the Mayor played by musician Common.

Like most friends, each woman has a different perspective regarding love and relationships. And although the title of the series is “Single Ladies” it could easily be the African American version of Sex and the City.

The show showcased some pretty amazing well known guest stars. Lauren London, Common, Queen Latifah, and Eve just to name a few although the well written and digestible script didn’t need the added the added appetizers to an already strong and seasoned cast.combined with a humorous and digestible script.

This show will be a featured regular on my DVR.

Smooches,

Shay******
